Vitamin Myths: What You Should Know Before You Buy

Myth 3: Vitamins sold in pharmacies are always safe
Vitamin supplements sold in pharmacies are often perceived as safe and harmless drugs. However, this is far from always the case. Not all vitamin supplements are of the same quality. Some supplements may contain not only active ingredients, but also various fillers that may not be safe for the body.
In addition, improper or excessive intake of vitamins can cause side effects. For example, too much vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood), which can impair kidney and cardiovascular function.
It is also important to remember that vitamin supplements can interact with medications, which can lead to unwanted effects. Therefore, before starting a course of vitamins, it is worth consulting with your doctor, especially if you are taking other medications.

Myth 4: Vitamins in tablet form are the same as vitamins from food.
While vitamin supplements can help compensate for vitamin deficiencies, they cannot completely replace the vitamins that you get from food. Vitamins from food are often accompanied by various phytochemicals, fiber and other components that promote better absorption of vitamins and support the normal functioning of the body.
Some vitamins, such as vitamin C or vitamin D, contain additional substances in their composition to improve their absorption, but this does not always lead to the same effect as vitamins from food. Food products also provide additional effects due to the synergy of components that cannot be reproduced in synthetic supplements.
Some vitamins in pill form may be less effective than those found in food. Vitamins from food are absorbed more fully and also contain other beneficial elements that affect overall health.

Myth 5: If I take vitamins, I don’t have to worry about my diet.
Many people believe that if they take vitamin supplements, they don’t have to worry about the quality of their nutrition. However, despite the beneficial properties of vitamins, they cannot replace a regular diet rich in a variety of foods. Natural sources of vitamins contain many other beneficial components, such as antioxidants, fiber, and minerals, which promote good health.
Regular consumption of foods rich in vitamins and minerals helps maintain the normal functioning of all body systems.
